Infectious Disease

An infectious disease specialist is a doctor of internal medicine who is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Their extensive education involves the treatment of infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.  Infectious disease specialists have obtained proficiency in treating infections of the bones, bowel, brain, heart, lungs, pelvic organs, sinuses, and urinary tract. Many specialize in treating patients with infections due to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of AIDS.  Infection Disease specialists also have additional training in immunology (how the body fights infection), epidemiology (how infections spread) and infection control.

MPMPC's board-certified Infectious Disease specialist is Dr. Benjamin Schaffer who is located in the Enterprise I office. Your family physician or internist will arrange a referral if you need to be seen by an Infectious Disease specialist.
